Kaiser Permanente

One Kaiser Plaza, 21B
Oakland, CA 94612

Kaiser Permanente began in the Depression as a way to insure the thousands of men employed building the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Each worker paid a set amount to be covered for work-related medical care – or paid a little more to have all medical care covered. From the beginning, this company has emphasized preventive care and a close doctor patient relationship. At Kaiser, the patient is informed about all options for care and is encouraged to take an active role in medical decisions.

Kaiser is the largest non-profit, health maintenance organization or HMO in the US. A Health Plan and a Medical Group manage the HMO in each region where Kaiser is available. Doctors are paid a salary by the Medical Group. They are an integrated health delivery system. The entire range of care for their members is provided and coordinated through their system.
